Question 116 · Meaning of Miracles

Why did Jesus raise people from the dead?

Biblical Background

Jesus raises the dead—such as Jairus’s daughter, the widow’s son, and Lazarus—to display His authority over death, the “last enemy” (1 Corinthians 15:26). These miracles confirm His identity as “the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25) and foreshadow His own resurrection.

Historical Context

Stories of Jesus’ raisings are among the most striking in the Gospels. They occur publicly, involve named individuals, and present realistic detail. Lazarus’s resurrection in particular played a major role in building faith among followers and intensifying opposition from authorities (John 11:45–53).

Theological Meaning

These miracles reveal that Jesus is the source of eternal life. They provide a preview of the final resurrection and demonstrate His compassion. Raising the dead points to His power to reverse the curse of sin and inaugurate new creation.
