What is the message of the Parable of the Good Samaritan?
Biblical Background
The parable teaches radical neighbor-love (Luke 10:25–37). A man is beaten; religious leaders pass by; a despised Samaritan shows compassion. Jesus commands, “Go and do likewise.” The parable reveals that neighborliness is defined not by ethnicity, status, or proximity but by mercy and action.
Historical Context
Jews and Samaritans were enemies. Jesus uses a Samaritan hero to challenge prejudice, ethnic boundaries, and religious hypocrisy. The parable shocked His audience, exposing the emptiness of legalistic righteousness.
Theological Meaning
Jesus demonstrates that love fulfills the law. Neighbor-love is sacrificial, costly, and universal. The parable also foreshadows Jesus’ own mission: He is the ultimate Good Samaritan who rescues humanity from sin, heals our wounds, and pays the cost to restore us. True discipleship imitates His compassion.
