Question 14 · Identity of Jesus

What does Christian theology teach about Jesus as fully God and fully man?

Biblical Background

Jesus displays divine attributes—authority over nature, power to forgive sins, preexistence—and human experiences such as hunger, fatigue, sorrow, and suffering. John 1:1 affirms His divinity; Hebrews 2:14 affirms His humanity.

Historical Context

The doctrine of the hypostatic union, affirmed at Chalcedon, states that Jesus is one person with two natures. He is fully God and fully man without confusion, change, division, or separation.

Theological Meaning

This union is vital for salvation. As God, Jesus has the power to save; as man, He can represent humanity. Only the God-man can mediate between God and people, offer a perfect sacrifice, and restore humanity to fellowship with God. His dual nature is a cornerstone of Christian theology.
