Question 159 · Salvation
How does the Holy Spirit apply the salvation Jesus achieved?
Biblical Background
The Holy Spirit regenerates, convicts, indwells, and empowers believers. Jesus promises that the Spirit will bring new birth (John 3:5–8), lead into truth, and glorify Christ (John 16:13–14). Salvation becomes personal and transformative through the Spirit’s work.
Historical Context
The coming of the Spirit at Pentecost empowered the early church and confirmed Jesus’ victory.
Theological Meaning
The Spirit applies Christ’s work by uniting believers to Jesus, granting faith, and producing spiritual fruit. Without the Spirit, salvation remains external; with the Spirit, salvation becomes a lived reality. The Spirit sanctifies believers, assuring them of adoption and guiding them into holiness.
