Question 152 · Salvation

Why is Jesus’ death essential for salvation?

Biblical Background

Jesus’ death is necessary because sin separates humanity from God and demands justice. Jesus identifies His death as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Paul explains that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3). His sacrificial death fulfills the Old Testament system of atonement and inaugurates the new covenant.

Historical Context

Sacrifices were central to Jewish worship, symbolizing the need for forgiveness through shedding of blood. Jesus’ crucifixion occurs during Passover, highlighting Him as the true Passover Lamb whose blood protects and redeems.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ death is substitutionary—He takes the penalty our sins deserve. It is also victorious, defeating Satan and breaking the power of sin. His death reconciles humanity to God, satisfies divine justice, and reveals divine love. Without the cross, there is no salvation.
