Question 28 · Death & Resurrection

What is the theological meaning of the resurrection?

Biblical Background

The resurrection declares Jesus to be the Son of God in power (Romans 1:4). It is the seal of God’s acceptance of His sacrifice and the defeat of sin and death (Romans 4:25; 1 Corinthians 15). The resurrection inaugurates the new creation and the final age of salvation.

Historical Context

The resurrection transformed frightened disciples into bold witnesses and turned the cross from a symbol of shame into the center of Christian faith. No plausible natural explanation accounts for this dramatic change.

Theological Meaning

The resurrection guarantees believers’ future resurrection, empowers new life through the Holy Spirit, and establishes Jesus as the reigning Lord. It shifts Christian hope from mere immortality of the soul to bodily renewal in God’s restored creation. It is the foundation of Christian worship, ethics, and mission.
