Question 26 · Death & Resurrection

What evidence supports Jesus’ resurrection?

Biblical Background

The resurrection is supported by multiple independent witnesses: the empty tomb, appearances to Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and more than 500 people at once (1 Corinthians 15:3–8). The disciples’ transformation from fear to bold proclamation provides compelling narrative evidence.

Historical Context

The rapid rise of Christianity in Jerusalem—where the empty tomb could be verified—argues strongly for the resurrection. Alternative explanations (hallucinations, theft, legend development) fail to account for the diversity and physicality of the appearances, nor the willingness of early Christians to suffer for their testimony.

Theological Meaning

The resurrection is God’s vindication of Jesus as Messiah and Lord. It confirms His victory over sin and death, inaugurates new creation, and guarantees the future resurrection of believers. It is the cornerstone of Christian faith.
