Question 23 · Death & Resurrection

What is the significance of Jesus’ crucifixion?

Biblical Background

Crucifixion was the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan and the climax of Jesus’ mission. Jesus identifies His crucifixion as His “hour” of glorification (John 12:23–24). On the cross He bears humanity’s sin, defeats Satan, and reconciles the world to God (Colossians 2:13–15; 2 Corinthians 5:18–21).

Historical Context

Crucifixion was a Roman method of execution reserved for rebels and slaves. Jesus’ death by crucifixion is one of the best-attested facts of ancient history, mentioned by Tacitus, Josephus, and other sources. Early Christians proclaimed a crucified Messiah—scandalous to Jews and foolish to Greeks—yet transformative in power (1 Corinthians 1:23–24).

Theological Meaning

The cross reveals God’s justice and love. Jesus takes upon Himself the judgment humanity deserves while offering forgiveness and new life. His crucifixion is the foundation of Christian salvation and the ultimate demonstration of divine humility and sacrificial love.
