Question 27 · Death & Resurrection

What is the significance of Jesus’ appearances after His resurrection?

Biblical Background

Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances demonstrate that He rose bodily, not merely spiritually. He eats with the disciples, allows them to touch Him, and teaches them about the kingdom (Luke 24; John 20–21). These encounters commission His followers to preach the gospel to all nations (Matthew 28:16–20).

Historical Context

The variety and consistency of the appearances support their authenticity. They occurred to individuals and groups, indoors and outdoors, to believers and skeptical individuals such as Thomas and Paul.

Theological Meaning

The appearances bridge the resurrection and the church’s mission. They confirm Jesus’ identity, strengthen the disciples’ faith, and reveal the nature of resurrection life. Jesus’ resurrected body is transformed yet physical, the prototype of believers’ future resurrection.
