Question 21 · Death & Resurrection

Why did Jesus have to die according to Christian theology?

Biblical Background

Jesus’ death fulfills God’s redemptive plan foretold in Scripture. Isaiah 53 describes the Suffering Servant who bears humanity’s sins, and Jesus identifies His death as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). His crucifixion satisfies divine justice while demonstrating God’s love (Romans 3:24–26; John 3:16). Jesus’ atoning sacrifice reconciles sinners to a holy God.

Historical Context

Jesus’ death occurred through Roman crucifixion under Pontius Pilate. Early Christian preaching consistently proclaimed that Jesus’ death was not an accident or failure, but the decisive act of God’s salvation. The earliest Christian creeds place the crucifixion at the center of faith.

Theological Meaning

Jesus had to die because sin brings death and separation from God. Only a perfect, sinless sacrifice could bear humanity’s guilt. Jesus, fully God and fully human, represents humanity and offers infinite, effective atonement. His death inaugurates the new covenant, bringing forgiveness, reconciliation, and access to God.
